If you have not attended a Bikram Yoga class, you have no idea how challenging 26 simple postures become with the addition of raised temperatures. Although my own yoga practice began with power yoga / raja, I was not prepared for what transpired in 90 minutes between me and my body. The first class, I felt good just to stay in the room the entire time and not pass out. I was not prepared or properly hydrated, but I knew at the end of the class that I was looking forward to the Shavasana.
My first Bikram Yoga class was in Asheville, NC where I now go every opportunity possible. Here is the 411 of Bikram and our studio spotlight for the month of August.
Bikram Yoga is named after its founder - Bikram Choudhury, who studied Yoga with Bishnu Ghosh, brother of Paramahansa Yogananda. It is a series of 26 poses performed in a room with temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Each Yoga Pose is usually performed twice and held for a certain period of time. Yoga Sessions start from Standing Postures, then the Backbends, Forward Bends, and Twists. The poses are accompanied by Kapalabhati Breath or the "blowing in firm".
Why practice Yoga in a heated room?
?Heat is used in Bikram and Hot Yoga in order to allow you to go deeper and safer into a Yoga Pose.
?Your body becomes more flexible in the heat and since most poses used in Bikram are physically challenging, heat allows you to get into a pose that you never imagined you can do.
?It also eliminates the risk of injuries, promotes sweating, and helps you release the toxins in your body.
?The Bikram Yoga Poses not only work on your muscles but also on your internal organs.
?Each pose stretches and strengthens your muscles, joints, and ligaments and, at the same time release the toxins and work on your internal organs like the glands and the nervous system.
Some people are often discouraged to practice of Yoga by thinking that they are not flexible enough. Yoga is not about being flexible, but about strengthening your body and your spine in all directions with the goal of creating a union between the body, mind and spirit. Adi and Janet first met during their extensive yoga teacher training course, lovingly dubbed "Yoga Boot Camp", in 2005. The course sparked an even deeper passion for yoga in each of them. The intensive training course demanded that they each work very hard, both emotionally and physically, in order to ultimately deepen their overall quality of life. In many ways the training course is designed to "kill you" in order to give way for a tremendous rebirth. Upon this journey, both Janet and Adi, individually discovered their dream of pursuing a yoga practice for a lifetime and sharing it with as many people as possible. After teaching at many different studios, Janet and Adi, reunited in 2007 with the common vision of creating a Bikram Yoga community in Asheville, NC.

Here's the deal. I'm not going to add soft glow or otherwise photoshop the hell out of my self portraits. Whenever possible, I'll show as much of myself as I can. No excessively creative cropping & stylized pouty-lipped preening for the lens (okay maybe sometimes because that's fun). No extended notes to my "fans" in the tags section begging for more views so I can make it on Explore. (These things are fine, if that's your thing; but that's not the primary goal here).
This is me, unvarnished. I might retouch a zit or two and I always process exposure & contrast in RAW, but that's about it. I'd like to look good, but I don't require that I look perfect.
The goal? Self acceptance and satisfaction. Whether or not I ever lose the weight I gained making three beautiful baby boys, I want to be happy with and proud of what I see when I see myself. I already adore the inside; it's time I caught up with the outside.
Do I want to lose weight? Absolutely. And I hope to as this year progresses, but my goal stated above remains the same regardless of what the scale says. Besides, I've long been convinced that self loathing and freeing up the space in our hearts to take good care of the self we're trying to force back into some semblance of our 19 year old firm bods don't exactly mix.
My husband thinks I'm hot. My kids think I'm beautiful and love my softness. I'm the only one--okay me and every present and former frat guy and gossip blogger in existence--who finds the very sight of me repulsive. So this is an exercise in facing the truth so I can embrace myself. Make sense? No worries; it does to me.
EDITED TO ADD: I thought this was going to be another year of daily self portraits, but as I thought about it last night, I realized that I've already scratched that particular itch by doing the 365 days project in 2007. So while I will write about self acceptance & other things related to this project with an accompanying daily photo, they won't all be self portraits. I will be real with a self portrait once a week, however.
