February 26 2009 - Back In The Pool
Last night at PT, my therapist (finally) gave me the thumbs up to get back in the pool and start swimming distances. Dr F had said that he figured it would be the end of February at the earliest, thanks to the leaking incisions, the delayed healing of the incisions, and the original fear of infection.
At this point, I've been out of the pool for a few days over 2 months - I swam right up until the knee surgery on 12/22. When I got out of the pool, I was doing about 1.5 miles in an hour each day - definitely not world record pace, but I was getting a whole body workout in an hour and burning a ton of calories. My PT said I was clear to do basic freestyle and simple flutter kicking - no breaststroke or butterfly (not that I'd try that one anyway) because of the different kicks required.
If you think about it, I've only got about 1.5 leg muscles at this point, so I wasn't sure how I'd do. I got in the pool and started going - I did about 3/4 of a mile in about 40 minutes. So, I was slower than the pace I was setting back at the end of December, but for all things considered I didn't do too badly - I think part of the slower pace is the fact that I'm not getting much (if any power) out of the kick from my left leg. My arms/chest/shoulders were a little tired, but I probably could have done more if I wasn't being careful of pushing it too much. There were a couple points in time where I got a little zinger in the knee, but if I was careful, I could avoid that.
So, yay! I'm back in the pool, didn't drown, and now have this to look forward to every couple of days (until I'm done with formal PT, and then I'll try and do it every day like I was before the surgery).
My patriotic summer outfit
On Sunday I went swimming to burn off the calories from Leslie Anne's delicious dinner the night before. Now it's my turn to cook. First a little photo shoot. I got the red cami top and blue denim miniskirt back in 2005 when I was a groupie and roadie for Gulrfriendz. To complete my patriotic colors, I'm wearing red, white, and blue earrings handmade at The Groovy Little Hippie Shop plus red lips and nails and blue eye shadow.
